Hello there.

Hello there. I'm Rob and I want to be an established cinematographer. I want this blog to be part of my journey towards achieving that life objective. I'll talk a little more about my learning process in other posts, but right now I think it would be nice if you got an understanding of my somewhat basic background. You can read on if you want to, or if you would rather just read about me trying to learn cinematography, then that is what the rest of this blog will be for.

I have written two or three blogs before, although this is the first time that I've started a blog because I completely wanted to. Also, I've realised that writing from time to time can help you drift off to places. Anyway, that's another story. I hope that writing this blog becomes a hobby that I can get in to.

A bit about myself...
I'm currently a BSc Television Production Technology student at Staffordshire University, UK. As of a few days ago from when this blog post was published, I've just finished my first year here and it's definitely been a big learning curve for me. Before starting here, I didn't really have any idea about how to make films or what a "good" video camera actually was. A camera was just a camera to me.

An apology to my Dad
I should probably apologise to my Dad for making him spend £350 on a Sony Handycam one christmas time (It could have been in 2006/2007. I'm not sure). The reason? I haven't really used it as much as I should of. It was only ever used for a few personal family memories and that was it. I was always waiting for something spontaneous and crazy to happen so I could just whip out my camera, film it and then upload the clip to the internet to earn millions and millions of views because I was that naive. So I am sorry.

As I've gotten older, I've realised that in reality, nothing like that ever happens or you would have to be extremely lucky to see anything. Plus, one thing that might not seem spontaneously awesome to one person might not like that to the next. It's really a horrible and judgemental reality of opinion.

Now that I am at university, I've realised that any camera is a good camera to start off with and I should have encouraged myself to make more films earlier without worrying if they were good enough. That would have gotten me much more experience that what I currently have. Gladly, my university encourages all of the students on my course and those which are similar to make as many films as possible. The perfect kick up the backside for me. I am now an owner of a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition because action cameras are just a genius invention.

I'm going to be learning cinematography next year as a hobby and as module at university. My perfect combination. I'll try to update this blog throughout this summer and for however long afterwards with everything that I learn. Hopefully, over the course of time, you will see me become much more experienced in what I do and what I create.
